Next Gen Impact

In 2020, Next-Gen Impact (NGI) embarked on a mission to better understand the professional development needs of teachers. We conducted a comprehensive survey with school teachers, asking them to identify and prioritize the areas where they felt they required the most training. To broaden our understanding, we extended this survey to college teachers and later included 80 educators from the Middle East.
Our findings revealed a significant overlap in the needs expressed by these diverse groups of educators. Across the board, teachers highlighted the necessity for training in three key areas: creating purposeful lesson plans, managing challenging students, and mastering classroom management techniques. These areas were identified as critical to enhancing the effectiveness of teaching and ensuring that students received the best possible education.
However, the educational landscape is ever-changing, and with the rapid advancements in technology, we recognized the need to revisit our findings. In 2023, with the increasing presence of AI tools like ChatGPT in the classroom, we conducted a follow-up survey with minor adjustments. We anticipated that the integration of AI would have altered the training needs of teachers.
Our updated survey confirmed our hypothesis. While teachers had initially expressed a strong desire for training on developing purposeful lesson plans, many now felt more confident in using AI tools for this purpose. The focus shifted toward a new challenge: how to effectively leverage AI to generate more relevant and tailored lesson plans. Teachers recognized the potential of AI to enhance their planning process but needed guidance on how to optimize these tools to meet their specific classroom needs.
This shift underscores the importance of continuous professional development for educators. As technology evolves, so too must the training and support provided to teachers. By staying attuned to these changing needs, we can ensure that educators are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in an increasingly digital classroom environment.
As we move further into the digital age, the training needs of teachers will continue to evolve. Our surveys at NGI highlight the importance of staying responsive to these changes, ensuring that educators receive the support they need to effectively harness new tools and technologies. By doing so, we can help teachers not only adapt but excel in their crucial roles as educators in a rapidly changing world.
